A Short History of SchoolStatus Unified Communications

March 08, 2021

Data analytics and parent communication come together in actionable tools that serve the classroom to the district office and everyone in between.

Introduction of 1:1 Communication tools

When we first added communications tools to our data analytics suite in early 2016, we weren’t sure how people would react. We knew we wanted to take data analytics to the next level with tools for actionable relationship building. To be able to make a call to a parent without revealing a personal phone number was cool and new, but as a component of data analytics, some saw it as a novelty. Automatic logging and recording of conversations in our digital cumulative folder (we call it the Student Card) allowed educators to review phone calls alongside benchmarks and assessments. It made student data and relationships with families inform each other. Novel? Sure. But it was just the beginning.

Users were still a little shy months later with the addition of text messaging using the same phone number. "How does it work?" people kept asking. "Communicating with parents is typically cumbersome. How could this be so easy?"

SchoolStatus Brief Overview

It didn't take long before the value of smart communication caught on. Fast forward a year or so and teachers were using SchoolStatus communication tools every day to make one-to-one phone calls, send text messages, and email parents all from the same place they were analyzing student data in a fraction of the time it took previously.

SchoolStatus has multiple helpful features, texting, redirecting to one's personal phone, translation to multiple languages, and recording calls with parents. All are invaluable tools. - David McIntyre, Assistant Principal, Bastrop ISD

Broadcast Group Messaging

Success! Adding communication to our data analytics platform had changed the game for educators–and that wasn't all.

SchoolStatus users wanted the ability to message an entire class at one time. This required some consideration. We weren’t really trying to do mass or group messaging. There were lots of other tools that handled mass messages, and we were focused on relationship building with individual, data-informed communication. And that's when we remembered our roots. The original idea for SchoolStatus was to put data in the hands of educators faster. We were answering a specific need. To be the best we could be, we were going to evolve based on what our users say they needed. And we did have teachers’ schedules automatically loaded in SchoolStatus, so why not? Enter Broadcast Messaging….quite possibly our most loved feature of all time.

Fast forward another year and Broadcast Messaging is hotter than the concrete sidewalk on the first day of August.

It is super convenient and easy to use. I really like how it keeps track of all your messages/calls to parents. I also really like how you can send a broadcast message to a large group of parents at the same time. - Jennifer Bindert, Teacher, Hoover City Schools

We have created a unified data analytics and communication platform that services the needs of everyone from teachers to superintendents by staying loyal to the principle that data should be actionable, and that it's always best to listen to what your users want.

SchoolStatus allows me to easily keep in contact with the parents of my students. It is especially beneficial for parents who speak a different language. It provides a gateway of communication that is vital for student success. - Lacie Jones, Speech Pathologist, DeSoto County Schools
