Hurricane Katrina “Blue Dog” reissued to raise money for Texas Schools

By SchoolStatus 2 min

After Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast 12 years ago, the late artist George Rodrigue painted a new “Blue Dog” with a red cross on its chest and an American flag in the background. Silkscreen prints of the painting raised $700,000 for disaster relief.

Thursday, the George Rodrigue Foundation (GRFA) announced that it will re-release the We Will Rise Again painting with proceeds going to schools damaged by Hurricane Harvey.

Ironically, the GRFA says much of the $700,000 raised in 2005 was generated by Texans.

This special release includes the reference “Hurricane Harvey 2017” in the white border alongside the words “We Will Rise Again” and Rodrigue’s official estate-stamped signature.

“The Blue Dog is partly submerged, and its eyes, normally yellow, are red with a broken heart,”

-Rodrigue, 2005

“The Blue Dog is partly submerged, and its eyes, normally yellow, are red with a broken heart,” Rodrigue wrote in September 2005. “Like a ship’s S.O.S., the red cross on the dog’s chest calls out for help.”

The prints will sell for $500 and will be sold through Dec. 31, 2017. Follow the link below to learn more.
