Dr. Kara Stern has seen school from just about every angle: high school English teacher, middle school principal, fellowship director for math and science teachers across New York City, and head of school at a rural N-12 school. That breadth is what she brings to her work at SchoolStatus, where she writes, speaks, and challenges educators to build the kinds of school communities where every student thrives. She holds a Master’s in Education Leadership from Teachers College and a Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning from NYU.
Dr. Michelle Gough, J.D., Ph.D., LL.M., combines her expertise as both an attorney and educational policy scholar as the General Counsel at SchoolStatus. Dr. Gough’s career includes leadership roles as an Agency Head at South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs, General Counsel to the Indiana State Board of Education, Head of Legal at Ellevation Education, Chief Legal and Assessment Officer at Project Lead The Way, General Counsel to the Indiana Department of Education, and Interim Agency Head and General Counsel to the Indiana Charter SchoolBoard. Her award-winning research on education policy and legal topics has been cited in leading journals, including Harvard Journal of Law & Gender, the New York University Journal of Law & Social Change, and the New York University Journal of Law and Social Change, and she has been an invited speaker at both national and international conferences on legal and education policy topics.
