The 2024 K-12 Family Survey provides valuable insights that go beyond mere data points; it offers a roadmap for school districts to navigate the complex landscape of family engagement.

Meet Families Where They Are

One of the key findings of the survey is the importance of proactive communication in addressing absenteeism. Families overwhelmingly (more than 71%) emphasized their preference for consistent, positive messaging that celebrates good attendance and calls out improvement. And they want to know about any absenteeism before a pattern takes hold. More than 45% of families only received communications about the importance of attendance after their child was absent; 9% never received these types of communications at all. By adopting proactive communication strategies, schools can empower families to take an active role in supporting their children’s successful journey through school.

Additionally, the survey highlighted the desire for tailored communication that meets the diverse needs of families. 37% of non-English speaking families reported that communications were not consistently relevant and tailored to them and their children’s needs. 

From non-English speaking families to those with specific preferences for digital communication channels, schools must ensure that their communication strategies are inclusive and accessible to all.
