Key Attendance Trends from the 2025-26 School Year: Insights from 1.1M Students

The latest analysis of absenteeism nationwide by Attendance Works and the Everyone Graduates Center at Johns Hopkins University found that 1 in 5 students remains chronically absent. Reversing that trend takes meaningful family engagement. The need for family partnerships extends beyond attendance, too. Academic progress, assessment scores, and even behavior all improve when educators and families act as partners.
Because family engagement is critical to so many outcomes, district leaders often search for the best platform to support it.
Two names often come up when districts start searching for a family engagement platform: SchoolStatus and ParentSquare. Both offer dedicated attendance tools alongside broader family communication platforms. SchoolStatus has two products that districts use to bolster family engagement: SchoolStatus Attend and SchoolStatus Connect. ParentSquare has its core messaging platform and Attendance Plus.
Here’s how the two compare on automating attendance interventions, personalizing family messages, sending mass notifications, and building classroom newsletters.
Successful chronic absenteeism interventions start with catching the pattern early and reaching families before it becomes a habit. Both SchoolStatus Attend and ParentSquare’s Attendance Plus combine attendance data and family outreach. The real difference between the two is the level of automation. SchoolStatus Attend integrates with a district’s SIS to identify students who require an intervention (based on their number of absences) and then sends it out. The whole process is automated without district staff members having to identify the right students, craft the language for the intervention message, or send it digitally or through the mail. In contrast, ParentSquare’s Attendance Plus requires some work from school staff members to get interventions sent to the right families.
Early Warning Insights is another place where SchoolStatus Attend stands out. Early Warning Insights is a predictive analytics feature that analyzes data from the first 60 days of school to identify students who are likely to end the year chronically absent, enabling school and district employees to reach out to families early to reverse the trend.
Early Warning Insights and strong automation work together for districts that partner with SchoolStatus. Automation means school staff members have more time to connect with families, and predictive analytics help them identify the families that most need extra help earlier in the school year.
This approach works. Districts that choose SchoolStatus Attend see an average 18% decrease in chronic absenteeism in their first year, with a cumulative 36% decrease by year two.
Both SchoolStatus and ParentSquare allow districts to send communication via email, text, and phone. However, only SchoolStatus includes mailed outreach.
The first attendance intervention sent through SchoolStatus is mailed. Research has shown how effective a mailed attendance intervention is, with 54% of families who receive one intervention never qualifying for another.
In some states, districts are required to reach out via mail when a student has accumulated a certain number of absences. SchoolStatus Attend enables districts to meet that requirement without dedicating any staff time. Mailed interventions also reach families in rural communities or families without persistent access to the internet.
Reaching out in multiple ways is an important factor in any district’s strategy to combat chronic absenteeism and reach all families.
SchoolStatus Connect and ParentSquare’s core messaging platform both pull from a district’s student information system. However, SchoolStatus Connect pulls in more information, including students’ attendance, academic, behavior, and assessment data. SchoolStatus Connect can also pull in information from other sources, like assessment platforms such as i-Ready and Renaissance. This means educators can look in one place to get all the information they need about a student, instead of navigating dozens of different platforms. This information can also be used to craft more personal messages, so families know exactly how they can help their children become better students.
ParentSquare’s platform also pulls in SIS data but only for a limited purpose: keeping contact records accurate and audiences correctly segmented.
While both SchoolStatus Connect and ParentSquare allow educators to reach out through translated, two-way messages, only one platform makes it easy for educators to include real-time student data in those messages.
Both platforms allow schools and districts to send mass notifications. Both SchoolStatus Connect and ParentSquare send alerts by text, email, app, voice, and web, with targeting down to a class, grade, school, custom group, or the entire district community.
However, data in SchoolStatus Connect allows districts to send segmented mass notifications. For example, a district can send a message to elementary families with low attendance, or ELL families with a failing grade. This capability means hyper-segmented messages that only go to the families who will benefit from them instead of just mass blasts.
SchoolStatus Connect and ParentSquare each have a dedicated newsletter builder. Both offer drag-and-drop editors, multimedia content, automatic translation, and tools for event and volunteer sign-ups. They also both feature integrations with Canva.
SchoolStatus Connect includes Smore, the newsletter tool already used by more than 70% of U.S. schools, built directly into the platform. Teachers pick from templates for weekly updates, event invitations, and seasonal themes, then personalize each one with text, images, polls, video, and forms, with an automatic table of contents. Smore also tracks open rates, click rates, and poll results so schools can see what’s actually resonating with families, and reports a 28% average improvement in family engagement rates.
The built-in Events and RSVP feature lets schools collect responses without a separate sign-up tool. Between the analytics, the interactive tools, and the direct tie to Connect’s data-driven messaging, families get one connected communication experience.
Both platforms help districts focus on attendance and family engagement. The clearest differences show up in the ability to predict absenteeism and reverse it before it’s too late, how deeply student data shapes each message, and the newsletter experience. SchoolStatus Attend brings two decades of attendance experience and proven results. SchoolStatus Connect ties student-specific data to every message, better segmentation, and Smore-powered newsletters.
